Stone Setting Class

This is a two day class

This class covers a selection of settings with varying degrees of difficulty including claw mounts.

You will be given extensive and detailed notes with seven different techniques for constructing stone settings to take away with you. This will enable you to make the settings at home if you don't get a chance to finish them all in the class.

The techniques covered include flat section prong setting, wire prong setting, basket prong setting, pedestal prong setting, 'U'-formed prong setting, 'X'-wire collet setting and crown collet setting.

These settings can be used for irregular shaped stones, cabochon stones of all shapes and facetted stones. Inexpensive stones will be available for sale from the tutor or you are welcome to bring your own.

You will have a variety of completed settings to look at and the different levels of difficulty will be explained to you. We suggest you start off with a setting that is within your ability and progress on to more difficult settings later. You should be able to complete a couple of settings on the first day depending on your rate of work. You pay for the silver that you use as you go along and on average each beginner’s project costs around £15.

On the second day you can refine the work you did yesterday or you can continue onto another project. You will be finishing the settings you’ve made and can add fittings to complete your jewellery. There will be time for questions and answers and problem solving particular design dilemmas. You are welcome to bring your own work to discuss difficulties with your tutor.

Your tutor for this class will be Maria Morris
