Advanced Techniques in Refractory Metals
This is a two day class
This class includes Titanium, Niobium and Platinum, anodising, isolating colours, cold connections, texturing, patinas, polishing and finishing.
These beautiful metals can be treated to produce an amazing array of colours for use in jewellery making. We will explore the wide range of brilliant colours these metals produce when anodized or heat-treated in the small studio/workshop setting.
You will have design freedom within the projects and materials will be supplied for small projects. Further materials can be purchased from the tutor.
The class will be 'hands-on' throughout with plenty of demonstration and practice. There will be time for problem solving with questions and answers.

You will be given a demonstration of the anodizing processes, using electrical equipment and thermal heat treatments. You will then be given metal to experiment with so you can learn the processes directly.
The first project will be colour chart preparation and the various methods of isolating colour. Next we will cover piercing out, shaping and texturing. You will be working towards a design that will combine your coloured metal with silver. Samples will be shown and an open discussion on designs, problems and solutions will be held.
Your tutor for this class will be Cordelia Stewart
