Paragon SC2 from £550 including VAT and delivery*

We're often asked which kiln we recommend for metal clay artists to buy and it's always the Paragon SC2! We've had ours for years and you can imagine the amount of hours they are running, and they're still going strong. Incredibly reliable, they are small enough to fit into your home but large enough to take several shelves of metal clay or glass fusing items.

Here's the technical bit...

The Paragon SC-2 is a low-cost plug-in kiln using a normal 13amp plug. It heats to a maximum of 1095°C. It's a square, ceramic-fibre, front-opening kiln, with an easy-to-use, eight segment ramp-hold, Sentry Xpress 3-key digital programmer.

The UK kiln is rated at 230V 1680W, so it can use a regular mains socket. It's small enough to use anywhere and it only weighs about 16Kg.

The outer steel case measures 336mm x 311mm x 400mm, and is slotted for air circulation: so it keeps cool. The door opens 180°, so you won't burn your hand taking your work out. And there's a removable stopper in the top vent for processes that might release fumes. The ceramic-fibre firing chamber, enclosed in an inner steel case, measures 199mm x 204mm x 145mm internally, and heats from both sides, with the fast-firing elements safely embedded in the fibre.

Uniquely, our UK SC-2 kiln has a sheathed thermocouple which prevents the possible corrosion, and eventual failure, of the bi-metallic tip usually caused by gases produced whilst heating some types of glass. The electronic display prompts for heating rate, target temperature, and hold time, making it easy to set up and re-use accurate drying, heating, holding, and cooling sequences.

The SC-2 comes in four versions: the basic - and cheapest version - is the SC-2 with a plain door. There's the SC-2B which has a bead-annealing door so if you do lampworking you might find this one is better for you.

The SC-2W with a heat-resistant glass viewing-window, really useful if you like to peep in and see what's going on! Wear UV filter glasses if you do this to protect your eyes. The window is also very useful if you do enamelling so you can see when your piece is ready to remove.

If you think you'll be doing everything, you can buy the SC-2BW which has a bead-annealing door and a heat-resistant glass viewing window.

The door you choose will dictate the price.

The Paragon SC2 allows you to work with Art Clay Silver 650 and PMC silver clay, all the brands of Bronze and Copper clays and Hadar's Steel Clay. Some brands of bronze and copper clay need to be embedded in activated charcoal granules in a stainless steel container: the SC-2 can hold a one-litre container. It's useful for bead annealing, china paint, dichroic glass, enamels, glass fusing, sagging, and slumping and low-fire ceramics.

The Paragon SC2 is probably the most popular small kiln in the UK and ideal for a small business or studio. It's larger than the mini-kiln, and large enough to do batch work, particularly for firing silver clay, doing enamelling, and fusing small pieces of glass.

It has a digital programmer which allows you to programme the kiln and then leave it to fire your metal clay perfectly. It also has a very useful ramp function which is essential for glass fusing and slumping or if you want to include glass in your metal clay work.

There's a recommended furniture kit, included in the price: one 178mm x 178mm x 15mm cordierite shelf and four 12mm shelf posts.

There's an extra kit, not included in the price, which lets you put more work in your kiln, frees your time, and reduces the unit cost of firing: one 178mm x 178mm x 15mm cordierite shelf and four 12mm posts. Depending on the material or process, and the sizes of your pieces, these shelves can be stacked up. This kiln has room for three, and you can choose 12mm, 25mm, or 50mm posts.

If extra kits are packed with the kiln, the delivery charge doesn't increase. Ordered later, not with the kiln, they need a box and protective packing and attract an extra delivery charge. Outside the UK mainland, this might be expensive. So, if you think you'll need them, order them with your kiln, along with any other accessories, materials, parts, or tools.

Kitiki Mini Kiln - £339

If you have space or cost issues, you could consider the Kitiki Mini Kiln. Smaller and more compact than the Paragon SC2, it is a great starter kiln.

Here's the technical bit...

The Kitiki MiniKiln is a low-cost plug-in kiln using a normal 13amp plug. It has a maximum temperature of 1000°C and is a rectangular, ceramic-fibre, front-opening kiln, with an easy-to-use, ramp-hold, 4-key digital controller.

The Kitiki Mini-Kiln is smaller than the Paragon SC-2, but still large enough to do small-scale work. It's great for firing all the silver metal clays and is a perfect enamelling kiln. As it doesn't have a ramp feature, it is not really suitable for glass fusing larger pieces although you may find it's OK for small fusing jobs or including small pieces of glass in your work.

The UK kiln is rated at 230V 700W, so can use a regular mains socket. It's small enough to use anywhere and it only weighs about 6Kg. The outer steel case measures 224mm x 244mm x 274mm, and is slotted for air circulation: so it keeps cool. The door is hinged on the left, opens 90°, and has a small vent-hole for processes that release fumes. The vent also serves as a peephole: it's not a glass window. The ceramic firing chamber, enclosed in an inner steel case, measures 113mm x 135mm x 66mm internally, and heats from the top, sides, and bottom, with the fast-firing elements safely embedded in the ceramic fibre.

It's important to understand that it has a controller, not a programmer. A controller does not offer automatic sequences with user-defined segments: it heats to a set temperature and stays there until you turn it off or reset the controller. This means you need to be around when the kiln is firing to turn it off, you can't just leave it to fire and stop like the SC2.

The Paragon SC-2 programmer allows you to set up, and re-use, four accurate drying, heating, holding, and cooling sequences: and do something else whilst the sequence is running. The Mini Kiln controller does not offer sequences and segments: it heats to a set temperature and stays there until you turn it off. For most people doing small-scale work, that's enough, although it helps if you buy a small digital timer to remind you that time's up. A Ramp Function can be enabled, and disabled, using a set of key presses described in the manual. A Ramp Function lets you choose how fast the kiln heats up or cools down. For example: it can heat up to 800°C over 75 minutes, or cool down from 960°C to room temperature over 180 minutes.

The recommended furniture kit, included in the price, consists of one hard ceramic-fibre shelf 100mm x 120mm x 10mm for metal clays, enamels, and glass.

Kiln Furniture Kits

Both our kilns have a recommended furniture kit, an appropriate mix of shelves and shelf posts, included in the price. Extra shelf kits allow you to stack your work, optimising your use of the firing chamber volume, and your time. It's very important to understand what the shelf kit consists of, why you might need a different one, and why you might need more than one. If you're not sure, go back and read more before completing your order. The prices are for shelf kits ordered with your kiln. Extra kits, ordered and delivered separately, may be heavy and need special protective packing: so email us or call first to check if there will be an extra delivery charge.

Electrical Supply

Kilns made outside the UK have been re-engineered to work on a single-phase 230V-240V mains supply. They've been comprehensively tested to meet the demanding UL 499 standard in the US and CE standard in the EU. UK voltage used to be 240V and European used to be 220V. The EU decided to harmonise the voltage to 230V, but the implementation costs were too high for almost no real benefit. So, to appear harmonised, the legal voltage limits were changed to 230V, but within the range 216V-253V. Generally, in the UK, 240V is a reliable average. The heating elements are embedded in ceramic fibre in the kilns we supply.
