Metal Clay and Polymer Clay Class

This is a two day class.

The combination of metal clay and polymer clay is a match made in heaven! This weekend will explore the versatility and complimentary properties of these two dynamic new media.

Starting on Day one by making a metal clay pendant bezel we will consider shape, texture and finish for the piece as well as techniques for making the frame and base. Whilst various stages of the PMC piece are drying and firing etc we will look at an overview of the various brands of polymer clay available, conditioning the clay, the various tools available, how to use the pasta machine and baking the clay.

Polymer clay is a beautiful, and economical way to incorporate colour into your silver work and on day two we will focus on three major techniques for the bezel insert:

  • Image transfer: any toner-copied image can be transferred onto raw polymer clay and baked to create a truly unique piece.
  • Simple canes such as bullseye, stacked cane (Ikat) can be made into complex patterns and designs in a suitable scale.
  • And finally the skinner blend is a wonderful background on which to place cane-work or images.

Putting the polymer clay insert into the completely finished PMC pendant is a particularly satisfying and rewarding process and one which will hopefully spark lots of ideas for your next piece as well!!

There will be handout notes to take away, lots of books and examples for inspiration and most importantly each other for an ideas and fun packed weekend.

Your tutor for this class will be Debbie Carlton.
