Off the Cuff - Make a Polymer Clay Bangle

This is a two day class.

Polymer clay is one of the most versatile and dynamic mediums about today with high quality design pieces being produced by artists all over the world. It can be used in conjunction with traditional materials such as silver and gold or incorporated with fibres, ceramics, glass or wood. It is quick and easy to learn the basics but can take a lifetime to explore the possibilities of this colourful-and economical-material. It is, in short, intriguing and addictive - you have been warned!!

On the first day we will e xplore a wide variety of polymer clay techniques from cane making to surface designs using images, gold leaf and textures. We will start with an overview of the various brands available, conditioning the clay, a look at the various tools available, how to use the pasta machine and baking the clay. We will then look at a number of different cane making techniques such as bullseye, jelly roll, skinner blend, twists and checker board.

On day two, we put it all together. Working with a brass bangle armature we will create veneers using the canes or surface designs from day one. The bangle is then covered in a number of steps with a baking between each one.

Emphasis will be on complimentary colours, patterns and textures and there is lots of scope for creative style. Finally we look at completing the piece either by sanding and polishing or using waxes and varnish to create a beautiful piece of wearable art!

Your tutor for this class will be Debbie Carlton.
