Polymer Clay Jewellery Class

This is a two day class.

Polymer clay is one of the most versatile and dynamic mediums about today with high quality design pieces being produced by artists all over the world. It can be used in conjunction with traditional materials such as silver and gold or incorporated with fibres, ceramics, glass or wood. It is quick and easy to learn the basics but can take a lifetime to explore the possibilities of this colourful-and economical-material. It is, in short, intriguing and addictive - you have been warned!!

Day one will start with an overview of the various brands available, conditioning the clay, a look at the various tools available, how to use the pasta machine and baking the clay. We will then look at a number of different cane making techniques such as bullseye, jelly roll, skinner blend, twists and checker board. From these simple techniques and using just black and white you can build up really exciting and sophisticated patterns and shapes to use for bead making and other jewellery work.

Polymer clay is the perfect ‘blank canvas’ and Day two will focus on surface design.  Polymer clay is made for texture and we will look at using ‘bought’ texture sheet as well as ‘home-made’ ones. Combining texture with paint effects such as iridescent powders, coloured pencils, gold and silver leaf offers yet more possibilities and finally we will look at image transfer where any toner-copied image can be transferred onto the clay and baked to create a unique piece of wearable art.

By the end of the weekend participants’ will have made a variety of canes, a number of different shaped beads with the  possibility to complete a pair of earrings, bracelet or brooch and have lots of samples of surface design techniques to explore at a later stage. You will get handout notes to take away, lots of books and examples for inspiration and most importantly each other for an ideas and fun packed weekend.

Your tutor for this class will be Debbie Carlton.
