Beginners Silverwork

This is a two day jewellery making class.

This class is very 'hands-on' and you will be making jewellery within the first hour. You will be carefully guided in the use of all tools and various related safety issues. Your tutor will set you projects that are specifically chosen to give you a good understanding of basic skills as well as finished items of silver jewellery.

You pay for the silver that you use as you go along and on average each beginner’s project costs around £15. There are four projects so expect to pay around £60 for materials. You will have some design freedom within each project so that every student's results will vary.

You will be impressed with how quickly you are able to produce professionally finished pieces using these simple projects. Each day we usually get two projects finished for you to take away with you.

The first project is a bracelet. You will gain confidence in using the small gas torch, cutting and bending silver as well as making and soldering jump rings.

The second project is a ring. This project will give you an understanding of measuring, using the saw frame, bending, soldering, texturing and polishing. Once you know how to make the ring, you also know how to make a bangle because exactly the same principles apply but on a larger scale.

The third project is cutting out. You will learn various methods for transferring your design onto the silver, drilling and piercing (cutting out). This piece is usually made into a pendant or key fob.

The last project is a combination of all the skills you have learned so far and you will make earrings. They can be any shape and texture with drilled holes for hand-made ear hooks.

Your tutor for this class is Lisa Cain
