Information about Chris

Chris is the owner and Principal of Touchmark Studios, Chew Magna near Bristol. The two storey studio provides a fully equipped jewellery workshop with six jewellers’ benches on the ground floor and a dedicated metal clay area with six work spaces on the upper floor.

Chris opened her studios in 2005 following completion of a four year metalworking course at the Bristol School of Art. This fulfilled a long time ambition to make jewellery which first started when she was 16 and when she cast a silver ring during a weekly recreational class at college.

The revelation of melting and forming metal into a ring re-awakened her creative side and on completion of her Business Studies course she decided that this was her passion and applied to do an eight year apprenticeship at the Goldsmith’s college in London. Unfortunately her application was denied; this was before the Sex Discrimination Act and female apprentices were not accepted, so her creative plans were parked for a while!

A long business career in sales and then IT ensued which eventually took her into developing and implementing computer systems and training executives in their use. Interacting with and training people around the country came naturally to her and she enjoyed this part of her job immensely. Following a five year career break in Singapore, she returned to the UK in 1999, moved to Bristol and finally took up her long awaited ambition to learn about jewellery making and metalworking and so a brand new, exciting door opened.

Chris first discovered metal clay three years into her four year metalworking course and was completely bowled over by it. She spent her final year at college researching metal clay and combining it with traditional forms of making jewellery and produced a unique body of work for her final dissertation. She knew she had to spread the word about this amazing new medium and started her teaching  practice soon after leaving college.

Chris is a generous teacher. She is passionate about working with metal clay and loves to share her wealth of knowledge and experience. She will always remember the thrill of making her first piece all those years ago and it is her aim to pass this experience on through her teaching. She believes that discovering your creative side can transform your life as it did with her and she is constantly reminded of this by those who come through her studio.

Chris’s Qualifications and Experience

Chris has taught metal clay for the past seven years. She also teaches traditional jewellery techniques, because she strongly believes that elements of traditional metalwork are essential to achieve high standards in metal clay.

She designs, makes and regularly exhibits locally and internationally and her work has appeared in a number of publications.

She became a Certified PMC Artisan in 2004 and has achieved Level 1 of the Master’s Registry Program.  She has passed the Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery Diploma in Silver Metal Clay. She makes it a priority to keep abreast of developments in the metal clay world by regularly attending Masterclasses in both metal clay and traditional techniques.

Chris is a member of the PMC Guild and a member and secretary of the Association for Contemporary Jewellery.
