Joy Funnell Masterclass

Discoidal Rings with Enamelled Accents

This is a two day Masterclass.

On this two day workshop you will make two colourful enamelled rings in Joy’s new Discoidal style. The cost of the workshop includes all materials, enough silver clay to make two rings and an enamelling starter kit for you to take home.

Joy will guide you through an easy method to make a  simple flat band ring with a really strong join, how to wrap a texture onto it  and then making the large disc feature for the front of the ring which will include how to flush set a stone which will be fired in place.

Once fired and polished you will learn Joy’s unique Enamelled Accents technique for adding decorative fine silver wires to the surface, how to prepare the enamels and how to enamel your piece including blending colours.

You will have a range of enamel colours to use at the workshop and to take home with you afterwards.

This workshop is not suitable for complete metal clay beginners, some basic knowledge of working with silver metal clay is required. No knowledge of enamelling is required.

Joy Funnell

Joy Funnell Tutor Profile

Joy was making jewellery for many years as a hobby before she encountered silver clay in 2005 and was hooked. Within a year she trained up to Senior Art Clay Instructor, gave up the day job and leapt into a full time career as a jewellery artisan.

She took her existing passion for enamelling to a new level when in 2009 she became the first person to be made a Craftsman of the Guild of Enamellers for six pieces of work all made using silver clay and enamel. Joy says “the traditional view of many enamellers has been that you cannot enamel on silver clay. I knew this was wrong and wanted to prove my point. It is great to see respected enamellers looking at silver clay with a new understanding these days.”

As well as running her own business Joy has a part time role as Assistant Editor (Technical) for Metal Clay Artist Magazine and has been a committed participant in the 2011 Bird a Week Challenge.

Joy is passionate about colour and texture in her work and she teaches all levels of silver clay and enamelling workshops from her base in Hastings. She also travels to teach and taught at the Art Clay World UK conferences in 2009 and 2010 and the Guild of Enamellers conference in 2011. She taught a pre conference workshop and gave conference presentations at the Metal Clay World Conference in Chicago in 2011.

Her work has been featured in many magazines and publications including Making Jewellery, Make Jewellery, Art Clay World UK Newsletter, Art Clay Society Newsletter, Metal Clay Today and Metal Clay Artist Magazine. She has written step by step articles and features for various magazines and for the second year running her work is in the Art and Design of Metal Clay Jewelry calendar. Her work has won awards in competitions around the world.

Joy is an enthusiastic and passionate teacher, always willing to share her knowledge but only too aware there is so much more for her to learn out there.
