A variety of innovative enamelling processes will be explored. We will touch on preparation of enamel, working with opaque and transparent colors, dry sifting and wet inlaying techniques.

Other techniques will include sifted, stencilled and sgraffito techniques, foils, water color and painting enamels, decal papers, torch and kiln firing.

Then we will move on to experiment with liquid enamels. This will give students an opportunity to work spontaneously with liquid form water based enamels, experimenting with the special effects that can be created with over firing and sgraffito techniques.

Fold formed copper, etched copper or simple formed pieces can be dipped, poured, or painted with liquids allowing the enamel to pool thicker and thinner, creating tonal variations in only one firing.

Layers of transparent, opaque or painting enamels can be added to create different pieces. This is a very loose and fun way to work with enamel so plan to bring lots of copper and experiment.

Simple approaches to cloissone and champleve will be discussed. Metal fabrication and finishing techniques will include cold connections as well as soldering findings on finished enamels. Some metalworking experience is helpful.
