Michael David Sturlin

The Art of Sawing and Piercing

This is a two day Masterclass.

The jeweler's saw is one of the most functional and versatile tools on the goldsmith's bench. Skilled use of the saw is an essential fundamental skill for jewelry makers, as well as an aesthetically pleasing and satisfying activity. Because it requires so little equipment, this technique is truly an application of minimalism in the studio.

pierced designs

Sawing and piercing are more than just a way to cut metal. When fully explored and mastered, the techniques of sawing and piercing open up great opportunities for creativity, technical virtuosity, and design in jewelry.

This class provides expert instruction in piercing techniques under the direction of a master goldsmith. Michael’s insight and guidance enables the practitioners to approach the work with an advantageous perspective as they learn to perfect their skills with the tool.

pierced frames

Students learn to transfer images from paper and to layout precise designs directly on metal. A series of practical exercises sawing lines, shapes, cutouts, patterns, decorative borders, and repetitive elements is followed by piercing a complex pendant design in fine silver.
