Casting Class
This is a two day class.
In this class you will explore many forms of casting, including cuttlefish, lead-free pewter casting and mould making.
You will be working with low melt alloy but all the same principles apply when working with silver - and fired silver metal clay. Metal clay artists, you've been wondering what to do with your fired pieces that didn't quite work out? Well this is the class for you! Use up that fired silver and make something totally new and unique.
The course will cover 2D and 3D mould making, cuttlefish casting, delft clay sand casting, cold rubber mould making and casting with stones in place.
You will learn why sprues are necessary and learn how to remove them from your castings. You will have several finished pieces to take home and get a good grasp of casting in the small studio workshop. All tools and equipment will be supplied but you may want to bring small items such as shells with you to copy.
You will have lots of samples to look at and discuss which will help you visualise the procedures. Your tutor will set you projects to give you a good understanding of the principles of mould making and casting.
You will have design freedom within the given projects so all the results will be highly individual. In just a few hours you will have produced your first moulds and castings. Polishing and finishing will also be covered.
You will be free to work at your own pace with guidance from the tutor when needed. There will be time for questions and problem solving sessions. You are welcome to bring your own work to the class to discuss specific problems.Your tutor for this course will be Maria Whetman
