Diploma in Silver Metal Clay Proficiency
Intensive Course

This is a 10 day course.

Many students travel large distances to train with us and have asked for the Diploma to be run as a single course. To meet this need, we've created the 10 day Diploma Intensive Course.

This course covers all four grades of the Diploma back-to-back. Days one and two cover the Beginners Metal Clay Diploma syllabus. Days three, four and five cover the Intermediate Metal Clay Diploma syllabus.

Day six is a free day, designed to give you time to recap on what you've learned and revisit any elements of the first five days that you feel you need to. There's no formal teaching on this day but the training room will be open for you to use the equipment. There will also be some optional guidance for you on what you might like to do on this day.

Days seven and eight cover the Advanced Metal Clay Diploma syllabus and days nine and ten cover the Teaching Metal Clay Effectively syllabus.

Brooches

As its name suggests, this course is intensive and moves at a very fast pace. Because of this, it's not suitable for beginners although beginners projects and skills will be taught on the first two days. This will give you a grounding in the basic skills and knowledge we expect you to have for the more advanced levels. You must be familiar with working with metal clay to attend the Intensive course.

The course has £340 of materials included in the cost. You also get extensive notes and suppliers' information.

The Mid Cornwall School of Jewellery has designed the very first independent qualification for working with Metal Clay.

If you want to teach classes or work seriously with metal clay, this is currently the most thorough training you can get anywhere in the world.

The Diploma in Silver Metal Clay Proficiency is free from any association with marketing, discounts or any particular supplier. Therefore it is the first truly independent qualification and sets the new standard for excellence within the metal clay world.

Things to consider before booking these courses...

This course is not suitable for beginners because of the intense pace of the course. You must have some experience of working with metal clay prior to signing up. We will however be covering the most basic metal clay skills, information and knowledge on the first two days of this course.

As we have no control over the content and quality of any beginners training you have already taken, we need to ensure that you have the most up to date and complete information about the history, composition and working requirements of both brands of silver metal clay to support your learning at more advanced levels. For students who have used metal clay extensively, this may seem like a backward step but in order to achieve the level of skill and knowledge we expect of our Diploma holders, this basic recap is necessary. It also gives anyone who wants to teach metal clay a masterclass in how to teach beginners. More advanced metal clay users should view this as an opportunity not just to recap basic information but also to learn how we approach teaching beginners.

Please be aware that students who have attended this course often say they didn't realise how intense it would be. The advanced class is particulalry intense as we expect advanced users of metal clay to work at a faster pace and be more proficient in making more complex projects. The standard required to pass the projects is very high and if you fall behind there is little time during the course to repeat a project. It's likely in this case that you will have to send in your completed project after the course has finished and we're very happy for you to do this.

On the other hand, people also find this course very challenging and have an enormous sense of achievement when they pass. The camaradarie amongst the groups who do the Intensive together is wonderful and everyone grows as an artist and a person when they experience this course.

Please consider carefully if you have enough experience of using metal clay and are prepared to work at a fast pace and under pressure before you book the Intensive. If you have any health issues you may also find this course too intense for you. If you are in any doubt, please contact us for a chat before booking.

All elements must be completed to the required standards, this is rigorously applied in all cases.

The skills you learn on this course are the basic metal clay skills required by anyone undertaking the Metal Clay Master's Registry.
